Patrick McGoohans erste fernsehserie, sie
machte ihn zum star und Großbritanniens bestbezahltem schauspieler. Allein das intro wurde zum klassiker:
Die figur John Drake war anders als die gängigen hau-drauf-serienhelden. Drake war clever und verwendete kaum waffen, dafür ausgefuchste technische utensilien vor allem seinen kopf. 39 der rund halbstündigen episoden der ersten staffel liefen ab 1962 im deutschen fernsehen. Von den ab mitte der 60er jahre produzierten 50-minütigen folgen schafften es nur etwa acht auf deutsche bildschirme.
Zwei
DANGER-MAN-episoden sind im hinblick auf NUMMER 6 von interesse:
deshalb zu trainingszwecken hier. Niemand kann den ort verlassen, alles steht unter permanenter überwachung durch verantwortliche im hintergrund, die als "Nummer 1" und "Nummer 2" bezeichnet werden. Wie Nummer Sechs erhält Drake eine Führung durch den ort, und in einer szene wird ein bewohner elektroschocks unterzogen. Im unterschied zu Nummer Sechs kann Drake den ort am ende zweifelsfrei verlassen. In "A View From The Villa" ermittelt John Drake in einem mordfall in Italien. Ein gemälde mit einem zunächst unbekannten ort gibt den entscheidenden hinweis. Er macht sich per auto auf den weg dorthin. Die episodenhandlung als solche ist relativ
belanglos, wäre da nicht der umstand, dass die zuschauer hier erstmals mit dem ort Portmeirion in Wales bekannt gemacht werden. Beim namen genannt wird er allerdings nicht. Zu sehen sind davon nur wenige sekunden, bei seiner ankunft in der hauptsache Bridge House, vorbei an Toll House mit Battery Square als italienische piazza, der Campanile sowie ein paar eher kurze einstellungen aus der totalen.
DANGER MAN aka SECRET AGENT Patrick McGoohan's first TV series made him a star and Britain's highest paid actor. The very introductory lines are classic: "Every government has its secret service branch, America its CIA, France Deuxième Bureau, England MI5. NATO also has its own. A messy job. And that's when they usually call on me or - someone like me. Oh yes, my name is Drake - John Drake."
The John Drake character was different compared to the usual TV fist-and-gun heroes. Drake was smart using hardly and weapon instead sophisticated technical gadgetry and his own wits. 39 of the early half-hour episodes were shown on German TV starting 1962. By the mid-60s only a handful of the later 50 minute episodes were screened.
Two
DANGER MAN episodes are of special interest regarding THE PRISONER
series:
different reasons (love, money, ideology). No one can leave the place, there's ubiquitous surveillance by "Number 1" and "Number 2" in the back. Like Number Six Drake is given a tour of the place. In one scene an inmate is treated with electro shocks. Contrary to THE PRISONER Drake, without doubt, manages to eventually leave the place. In "A View From The Villa" Drake investigates a murder in Italy. A painting showing an unknown place gives him a clue. In his car Drake drives to the place. What follows in terms of action doesn't really matter. If it weren't for the fact that TV viewers
here were introduced for the first time to the Welsh village of Portmeirion. In fact, only a few glimpses of the village could be catched, mainly Drake's car driving under the Bridge House arch, past Toll House to Battery Square as an italian piazza, a shot of the bell tower and some more rather brief total shots. Also, there was no mentioning of the place's real name.
