DAS GRÜNE KUPPELGEBÄUDE - DOM
THE GREEN DOME - PANTHEON

Nach seiner ankunft erhält Nummer Sechs eine telefonische einladung ins reich von Nummer Zwei, der ihm beschreibt: das grüne kuppelgebäude.

Dieses bauwerk auf einer der höchsten erhebungen ist neben dem glockenturm das markanteste überhaupt in Portmeirion und besteht im grunde aus zwei teilen: Der achteckige dombau mit einer laterne auf der kuppelspitze wurde 1961 fertig gestellt, nachdem, wie häufig zu lesen ist, Williams-Ellis schon länger ein "dom-defizit" in seinem dorf beklagt hatte. Das kuppeldach bestand lange zeit aus grün gestrichenen holzschindeln, die in den 90er jahren aus gründen des brandschutzes durch nach und nach grünlich oxidierendes kupfer ersetzt wurden.
Bereits seit 1957 an der selben stelle steht die "veranda", der weiße eingangsbereich. Zwei greifvogelstatuen thronen auf seinen äußeren ecken. In wirklichkeit handelt es sich hierbei nur das oberteil eines gewaltigen kamins. Williams-Ellis hatte ihn schon 20 jahre zuvor gekauft. Er war unter dem namen The High Cloister bekannt. Die wahren proportionen der beiden bauteile zueinander weiß man erst richtig einzuschätzen, wenn man sich dem dom von der rückseite nähert (mehr...)!

Vor der eingangstür des Pantheons stehend hat man einen schönen ausblick über Battery Square, einen teil des ortes und bis auf das watt. In der serie war darin die residenz von Nummer Zwei. Hinter der tatsächlich existierenden haustür lag ein gediegen möblierter vorraum, daran schloss sich die unter der kuppel zu vermutende sehr futuristisch gestylte kommandozentrale an, von der aus lifte in die gewölbe der macht führten.
Das Pantheon liegt am einen ende einer sichtachse zur Hercules Hall oder Town Hall (bilder unten), nach Williams-Ellis das "Rathaus ohne stadt", die in NUMMER 6 ebenfalls in eine rolle spielt. Interessant das innenleben des zur straße liegenden vermeintlichen eingangsbereiches; hier befindet sich schlicht eine öffentliche toilette.

Williams-Ellis hat immer versuchen widerstanden, das Pantheon tatsächlich als dom für kirchliche bzw. religöse zwecke zu nutzen. Heute steht es für ausstellungen und veranstaltungen zur verfügung.

Allgemeines über Portmeirion

After arriving in the Village Number Six receives a phone call by Number Two inviting him into his domaine, as he describes: the Green Dome.

This building, beside the Bell Tower or Campanile, situated high on top of a cliff, is Portmeirion's most famous building that consists of two parts: The base of the dome is octogonal and has a lantern on its cupola top. It was finished in 1961 after Williams-Ellis for quite some time had been talking about a "dome deficiency" in his village. For decades it used to have a green slats roof which, for fire safety reasons, was replaced in the 1990s with oxydizing copper gradually returning the green hue.
Since 1957 the "porch", the white painted entrance, has been standing on the same spot, with two eagle or griffin statues domineering it from its two corners. Williams-Ellis had aqcuired it 20 years earlier. This in reality had been only the upper part of a huge fireplace. It was known as The High Cloister. Standing in front of the Pantheon entrance door enables a nice view over Battery Square, parts of the Village and until the Portmeirion estuary. In the series it served as Number Two's residence. Behind the real entrance door was a solidly furnished anteroom after which came the very futuristically stylized center of command supposedly beneath the cupola. Elevators led into the vaults of power.
The Pantheon was erected on the one end of an axis aligning it with Hercules Hall which is also known as the Town Hall (seen on the pictures above) that played a considerable role in THE PRISONER. Williams-Ellis used to say the "Town Hall without a town". It is interesting to note that behind the supposed main entrance, adjacent to the street, there is just a public toilette.

Because of the shape of this building Williams-Ellis was frequently approached and asked to let the dome for purposes of the church or religious ceremonies but he always resisted. Nowadays the Pantheon is used for exhibitions.
