NUMMER 6 zieht seine bekanntheit zu einem guten teil daraus, dass die figuren nummern statt namen tragen. Diese charaktere bilden die ausnahme. Warum ausgerechnet sie, ist nicht bekannt.
Es fällt aber auf, dass man individuen mit namen nicht trauen sollte, denn gerade sie werden von den örtlichen autoritäten in irgendeiner weise gegen Nummer Sechs benutzt. Dutton bildet die ausnahme von der ausnahme, so weit man das sagen kann. Er wird ein opfer von medizinischen tests.

Paradox ist die situation im fall Nummer Sechs. Sein bürgerlicher name ist und bleibt unbekannt - außer man hält es für sicher, dass er wirklich John Drake ist (mehr...). Er erhält vom Village einen ansteckbutton mit der nummer "6", den er sogleich wegwirft. Er ist entrüstet, gebraucht jedoch gleichzeitig seinen eigenen namen als ausweis seiner individualität auch nicht offensiv dagegen. Warum? Beugt er sich dem druck? Bei all seinen sonstigen verweigerungsstrategien, sieht er darin eine art subversive aktion? Natürlich weiß Nummer Sechs, dass die verantwortlichen seinen zivilen namen kennen (seine dienstlichen decknamen werden fast alle aufgelistet). Oder ist es schlicht das drehbuch, das mit dieser maßnahme die figur geheimnisvoller, aber auch universeller macht?

Selbst wenn McGoohan es gebilligt hätte, den namen John Drake konnten die produzenten nicht benutzen, da die rechte an der figur bei ihrem erfinder, Ralph Smart, lagen.

"Demaskierung" - schlusssquenz: Während die anderen darsteller ihren credit erhalten, firmiert der hauptdarsteller (kaum sichtbar im grün-gelben sportwagen links hinter dem LKW) lediglich als Prisoner; ein detail, das in der deutschen fassung fehlt.

THE PRSIONER is well known partly because its characters bear numbers instead of names. Those listed above are the exception, the reason for this we don't know.
But what is striking is that individuals with names obviously cannot be trusted. Because they are mere tools in the hands of the Village authorities' against Number Six. Dutton being the exception of the exception, at least, as far as we know. For he becomes a poor victim of some medical tests.

It's a paradox situation in the case of Number Six. His ordinary name is and remains unknown - unless we take it for granted that he is in fact John Drake (mehr...). By the Village he is given a button with the number "6" on it which he throws away instantly. He is indignant but at the same time he is not going to use his own name as a token of his individuality against this. So, why isn't he? Does he comply to the pressure? Regarding all his other strategies of refusal, does he see this as an act of subversion? Of course, Number Six knows that his real name is well known to the officials (while almost all his aliases are listed). Or else, is it simply the script rendering this character both even more mysterious but also more universal?

For the producers it wasn't possible to use the name John Drake even if McGhoohan had agreed to do. Because it was Ralph Smart, its creator, who owned the rights of this character name.
