DRAKE OR BREAK

"Du meldest dich bei mir sofort in der früh!" - Was in der deutschen fassung völlig unspektakulär und unverfänglich daherkommt, sorgt unter fans im englischen sprachraum seit langem für teils heftige debatten: Die frage, ob Nummer Sechs der geheimagent John Drake ist bzw. im früheren leben war.

Den auslöser und vermeintlichen beweis bietet eine winzige äußerung von Nummer Zwei während der maßnahme "Extreme Absolute Position" in der vorletzten episode "Pas de deux". Nummer Zwei stellt mit einem unter hypnose stehenden Nummer Sechs szenen aus dessen jugend nach. In der rolle des schulleiters bestellt er ihn nach einem vorfall für den nächsten morgen in sein büro.

Hardware: Was sagt Leo McKern, Nummer-Zwei-darsteller, in diesem augenblick im original wirklich: "Report to me in the morning break!"
Ohne vernünftigen zweifel kommt man nach zwei-, dreimaligem hören zu diesem wenn auch grammatikalisch nicht völlig sauberen ergebnis, da es eher "on" oder "at" statt "in the morning break" heißen müsste. Manche behaupten, McKerns mund forme sich nicht zu einem "B", sondern - "D" für Drake. Das akustische resultat bleibt unter exegeten zugunsten ihrer theorien umstritten.

Software: Nummer Sechs mag tatsächlich John Drake sein, die figur, seine sprechweise, sein verhalten, seine einstellungen sprechen dafür. Schließlich ist NUMMER 6 das follow-up zu DANGER MAN JOHN DRAKE.

Hilfreich für die vermarktung war die parallelität und der kleine rest an unbestimmtheit ganz sicher. Und McKern könnte sich auch versprochen haben. In keinem der veröffentlichten skripte findet sich ein hinweis auf "Drake". Doch dialogänderungen auf dem set sind nichts ungewöhnliches. Also eine absichtlich gelegte fährte ins nirgendwo? Aus dem episodengeschehen jedenfalls ergibt nichts zwingend, dass der junge mann beim namen gerufen werden müsste, im gegenteil. Nummer Zwei nennt ihn mehrfach "mein junge", was in den kontext der anonymisierungsstrategie des Ortes passt, und ungeachtet der tatsache, dass in der serie verschiedene personen mit namen vorkommen. Doch was nützt dieses wissen? Wer Nummer Sechs im bürgerlichen leben ist, spielt keine große rolle, "six of one, half a dozen of the other". Er sei nicht John Drake, hat McGoohan ausdrücklich betont. Aus rechtlichen gründen konnte er den namen "John Drake" nicht benutzen, und vermutlich wollte er es auch nicht, um die universalität seiner jedermann-figur nicht zu beeinträchtigen. Hingegen behauptete scriptredakteur George Markstein bis zuletzt, dass Drake Nummer Sechs war. Aber das ist eine andere geschichte (mehr...).

"Du meldest dich bei mir sofort in der früh!" - "You report to me early in the morning!" - These are the German words that Number Two says to Number Six during their struggle of wills in the "Degree Absolute" operation which is part of the "Once Upon A Time" episode. And there is nothing about these unimpressive words that points toward the sometimes fierce debates among PRISONER devotees: the question whether Number Six is or was secret agent John Drake.

In this penultimate episode Number Two has a hypnotized Number Six regressed first into his childhood then into the stage when he went to school and some incident happened. Playing the headmaster he wants to see young Number Six in his office the next morning.

Hardware:, what exactly is it that Number Two actor Leo McKern says? "Report to me in the morning break!"
There can be no reasonable doubt, after listening to the crucial moment twice or three times. Although, grammatically speaking, this isn't totally correct, a Brit or an American would rather say "on" or "at" instead of "in the morning break". Some, regardless of the acoustic facts and in favour of their own theory, opine that McKern's mouth forms not a "B" but a "D" - for "Drake", that is.

Software: Number Six may well be John Drake. It is the character, his way of talking, his attitude and convictions that support this thesis. After all, THE PRISONER was the follow-up to DANGER MAN aka SECRET AGENT.
The striking parallels between the two characters and a remainder of uncertainty certainly must have been considered helpful for promoting the series. McKern also might have misspoken. Nowhere in all the published scripts is he called "Drake". And dialogue changes on the day of shooting are not uncommon in the business. Thus, could it be a laid out red herring? Out of the episode context, in turn, there is nothing that necessitates to call the young man by his proper name, several times Number Two calls him "my boy". This is also consistent with the general approach of anonymisation by the Village, regardless of the fact that there are several persons who do have names. (more...).
But is this knowledge helpful? "Six of one, half a dozen of the other!" - it isn't very important. For legal reasons McGoohan was unable to use the name "John Drake", and presumably he never intended to do so in order to keep the universality aspect of his everyman character intact. On the other hand, script editor George Markstein was the contender who until his very last moment stated that Number Six was Drake. But that's a different story (more...).
