Geografie ist eine physikalische illusion, linien auf karten, worte auf schildern. Ein ort erhält auf diese weise seine identität. Man ist letzten endes dort, wo man sich wiederfindet. Mr. Donovan sagt, alle länder sind länder des geistes.

Der ort, wohin Nummer Sechs entführt wird, trägt keinen Namen. Fast könnte man behaupten, die deutsche version drückt sich um eine konkrete bezeichnung. Dialogregisseur Brinkmann hat sich bei der übertragung ins deutsche nicht festgelegt: Es ist schlicht der Ort oder das hier, hierher, platz - niemals aber Dorf! In den TV-magazinen 1969/70 war oft vom "Städtchen" die rede.

Symptomatisch dafür eine kurze szene in der ersten folge: Nummer Sechs, kurz nach seinem erwachen, sieht eine kellnerin tische im café decken.

Kellnerin:
We'll be open in a minute. In ein paar minuten öffnen wir.
Nummer Sechs:
What's the name of this place? Wie heißt dieser Ort?
Kellnerin:
You're new here, aren't you? Sie sind neu hier, nicht?
Nummer Sechs:
Where? Wo bin ich?
Kellnerin:
D'you want breakfast? Wollen Sie frühstücken?
Nummer Sechs:
Where is this? Wie heißt das hier?
Kellnerin:
The Village? Wie das hier heißt?
Nummer Sechs:
Yes. Ja.
Kellnerin:
I'll see if coffee's ready. Vielleicht ist der Kaffee schon fertig.

So ist es im original: "the Village", der Ort, das Dorf - das dialogregisseur Brinkmann sich weigert, so zu bezeichnen. Erst in der allerletzten episode wurde den britischen zuschauern der hinweis auf den realen drehschauplatz gegeben: Portmeirion.
Auf einer karte, die Nummer Sechs kauft, gibt es ebenso wenig namen für die berge oder das meer. Sie heißen, was sie sind.

Wo aber ist der Ort?

Das hängt davon ab, von welchem ort man spricht: Prisoner's Portmeirion liegt entweder vor der küste von Marokko, wie glaubhaft dargelegt in "Herzlichen Glückwunsch"; 30 meilen von der polnischen grenze entfernt, nach aussage Nadjas in "Die Glocken von Big Ben"; oder gerade mal außerhalb von London an der autobahn A20, wie in "Demaskierung" zu sehen. Was aber alles nicht stimmt. Die produktion lässt es klugerweise im ungewissen, legt nur einige irreführende fährten aus.
Der geografische ort, das faktische Portmeirion der dreharbeiten, jedenfalls ist am ehesten lokalisierbar und liegt in Nord-Wales in der bucht von Tremadog. Dieses wissen ist geeignet, ein stück schaulust zu befriedigen, indem man dem drehschauplatz einen besuch abstattet. Der wahre ort jedoch ist ganz woanders und ruht möglicherweise in jeden von uns selbst.

Geography is a matter of physical illusion, lines on a map, words on a signpost. It's this that gives a place its identity. After all, you are where you recognize yourself to be. Mr. Donovan says, that all countries are countries of the mind.

The place to which Number Six is abducted bears no German name. One could maintain the German version trys hard to avoid giving it a name. It's simply "der Ort" - the place - or "here".

There is one characteristic scene early in the first episode, shortly after Number Six' awakening; he spots a waitress setting tables in the café.
Number Six hectically (in re-translating the dialogue): "Where am I, what is it called here?" - She replies cheerfully, without interrupting her work: "Where is this...?" Her reply in the English version: "... the Village?" - That's what it is in the original version: "the Village", German: das Dorf, der Ort. And only in the very last episode British viewers were informed about the real name of the location: Portmeirion.
A map that Number Six buys neither names the mountains nor the sea. Their names simply are what they are.

But where is the Village?

That depends - which Village you are talking about. Prisoner's Portmeirion (German language article) is either located off the coast of Marocco, as credibly displayed in "Many Happy Returns"; 30 miles away from the Polish border, according to Nadja in "The Chimes Of Big Ben"; or else, just outside of London near the A20 motorway as seen in "Fallout". Which is all wrong, of course. Wisely, the exact location is never stated in the series. Only some misleading traces had been laid out by the production.
The physical Portmeirion (German language article), where the series was actually filmed, can be tracked down quite easily: on Tremadog Bay in North Wales. This knowledge may be suitable to satify one's curiosity in travelling there. The real location, however, is to be found somewhere else, possibly resting inside all of us.
