BEACHY HEAD

Teil der südenglischen steilküste in der nähe von Seaford und Eastbourne. Die exakte nautische position des dortigen Leuchtturms lautet: 50° 44' 0 N 00° 14'.50 E. Die gegend ist ein naturschutzgebiet.
Der heutige granitsteinturm, 43 m hoch, wurde 1902 anstelle eines früheren auf den klippen etwa 160 m weit vom felsensockel entfernt im meer errichtet. Er wird seit 1983 automatisch betrieben. Sein rotierendes licht ist ca. 25 seemeilen weit sichtbar.

1999 brachen tausende tonnen kreidefelsen durch erosion ab und fielen etwa 150 m tief ins meer, wobei der schutt fast die gesamte distanz bis zum leuchtturm bedeckte (bild rechts).

BEACHY HEAD

Part of the southern coast of England near Seaford and Eastbourne. The exact nautic location of its lighthouse is 50° 44' 0 N 00° 14'.50 E. The area is a protected habitat for plants and animals.
This granite stone tower of 43 m height was erected in 1902 replacing a former one on top of the cliffs. The lighthouse was built about 160 m seawards of the cliffs' base. Since 1983 it has been operated automatically. The rotating flashlight is visible for ca. 25 sea miles.

In 1999 thousands of tons of eroded chalk rock came lose and crashed 150 m down into the sea, the rubble covering almost the entire distance between the cliffs and the tower.

The lighthouse plays a more or less important role in the three PRISONER episodes "Many Happy Returns", "The Girl Who Was Death" and "Fall Out". And there is one remarkable non-PRISONER appearance of this coastal area in the movie QUADROPHENIA. More... (German language page)
