1. Arial
, 2. Times New Roman, 3. Verdana, 4. Albertus, 5. Village, 6.

Warum? Wir wissen es nicht.

FRIENDLY FONT

It wasn't enough for the production design department of THE PRISONER to deal with colourful costumes and umbrellas for the great number of extras. An almost entirely self-contained world of signs was created with the Pennyfarthing doubtlessly standing out (more...) and most notably the typeface characters that the series is presented with to the public at the beginning of each episode. Those characters do also appear on several props.

For the PRISONER's credit and end-title sequences, for folders, maps and food cans (but not, strangely, for the "Tally Ho" headlines) the aptly antiquesizing Albertus type was used as a basis and changed slightly.

Berthold Wolpe first designed Albertus in 1932 to 1940 creating only big letters, the lower-case letters following a few years later. After Monotype in England was commissioned the typeface it was named after Albertus Magnus, the medieval scientist and philosopher. Its reduced serifs express strong simplicity. Wolpe developped the type-face according to bronze letterings with the letters being cut from their outlines instead of carving them into the base material. The font, therefore, stands right between the classical, serif letters and those non-serif moderns.

The PRISONER true-type font is known as Village and it was created by Mark F. Heiman who provides it free of charge (e.g. here...). It isn't particularly suitable for use on websites, though. Only as graphic files it can be used instead, not the font itself. Because it isn't installed on any standard computer system. The operating system will then proceed and chose a substitution font which might ruin the page layout.

A NICE EXAMPLE FOR THE USE OF
THEIR OWN TYPOGRAPHY

The Village typeface, also, isn't really the right choice for big quantity texts, rather for headlines or text inserts. And it is advised to use the lower-case letters through which the changes to the original font can be seen best. As with most serif-typefaces using only upper-case letters will result in some visual monotony when a certain quantity of text is employed. The most remarkable change was applied to the lower-case "e". Here the upper right bow was opened up to give this letter almost a "Euro" sign appearance. The lower-case dots of the "i" and "j" were abolished and for the principal character's name McGoohan a special upper-case "G" character was created. And for the letter "P" of Patrick a lower-case but extremely upscaled letter "p" is used. The same applies to the word Prisoner.

For comparison the above table demonstrates the look of the two popular fonts Arial and Times New Roman, first, and that of Albertus and Village, all 24 points in printsize, in addition the included canopied Pennyfarthings as special characters:
1. Arial
, 2. Times New Roman, 3. Verdana, 4. Albertus, 5. Village, 6. & 7. typeface name in Albertus and Village
Those willing to train their creative powers using the Pennyfarthing symbol should download the font and process, i.e. enlarge the character with an imaging or vector-graphics tool rather than copying other people's image files and blow them up to some very questionable dimensions while the image quality fades.

NO PROPER "E" ON THE VILLAGE MAP. WAS IT FORGOTTEN?

It is also true that the specific typography isn't in use all over the series. The name of the newspaper "The Tally Ho" is set in rather traditional Times manner. Every now and then both, Albertus and Village are in use next to each other, the lower case "e" unchanged: on the Village map that Number Six receives in the shop. Why is it? We don't know.
