EXISTENTIALISM Cliché has it that existentialists used to be wearing black clothes with roll-neck sweaters and to be sitting in neon-lit Paris cafés, smoking strong filterless cigarettes and reading Jean-Paul Sartre's "Being and Nothing" - "L'être et le néant" whence came the pun "Lettre et le néon": "The word and the neon". One of the main, and maybe the very philosophical conception of living and of the world during the 50s and early 60s came from France and was popular especially among academic circles although a variety of this thinking has been present ever since the 1920s thoughout Europe. They have in common the look at man not only as a rational acting being but under his specific circumstances, be it fear, and the need for taking decisions of life and death. This was popularized not least by the novels and plays by Jean-Paul Sartre whose work always included a political and practical discourse.
We find traces of existentialism not so much in the episode plots itselves but, without doubt, encapsulated in Number Six' strong moral principles which eventually led him to resignation from his presumably delicate and governmental job and to his refusal of giving away the reasons for his decision in the effort to live a life on his own. On his blog "prisonerologist" Moor Larkin, as he is known with this pseudonym, writes in 2009: "The hugely varied roles [Patrick McGoohan] played in theatre no doubt also gave him a solid bed-rock of ideas. However, there is one particular aspect, related to the theatre, that I have only recently come to realise may have been either a direct influence upon his developing ideas, or at least go to demonstrate the zeitgeist that his philosophies derived from. None of this means anything of course. Every individual is the result of their own environment. That could be said to be an existentialist point of view. Existentialism: Branch of philosophy based on the situation of the individual in an absurd or meaningless universe where humans have free will. Existentialists argue that people are responsible for and the sole judge of their actions as they affect others. All self-aware individuals can grasp or intuit their own existence and freedom, and individuals must not allow their choices to be constrained by anything – not even reason or morality. This freedom to choose leads to the notion of nonbeing, or nothingness, which can provoke angst or dread. Existentialism has many variants." http://numbersixwasinnocent.blogspot.de/search?updated-min=2009-01-01T00:00:00Z&updated-max=2010-01-01T00:00:00Z&max-results=20
