PORTMEIRIONDer reale schauplatz der dreharbeiten der serie NUMMER 6 ist eine luxuriöse hotelanlage in Nord-Wales. Sie entstand seit 1925 über jahrzehnte nach ideen und plänen ihres begründers Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Bei der britischen erstsendung wurde der wirkliche name des schauplatzes erst in der letzten episode enthüllt.
Der eintritt in Portmeirion ist kostenpflichtig. Einige bereiche, da zu vermieteten cottages gehörend, können nicht besichtigt werden. Berühmt ist Portmeiron auch für keramikarbeiten aus der Pottery, unter anderem kann (oder konnte) man das gesamte dorf im miniaturformat erstehen, und für seine rhododendronsammlung. Es gibt noch weitere kunsthandwerkliche geschäfte. Für das leibliche wohl während oder nach der besichtigung laden diverse cafés oder das selbstbedienungsrestaurant ein bzw. zum stilvollen dinieren das restaurant des hotels. Unter diesem titel berichtete am 23. Mai 1971 eine publikation über den ort von Nummer Sechs, von der man es zuallerletzt erwarten würde: Die kluge Hausfrau. Dabei handelte es sich um ein blättchen der EDEKA-handelskette, die damals in praktisch jeder ortschaft ein (aus heutiger sicht winzig kleines) lebensmittelgeschäft betrieb. Ähnlich wie heutzutage die apothekengazetten gab es das monatliche heftchen kostenlos. Es war ratgeber für die (selbstredend!) "kluge hausfrau", beantwortete fragen rund um den haushalt, enthielt kochrezepte, schmink- und eben auch: reisetipps. Portmeirions zu jener zeit schon über 80-jährigen erbauer Sir Clough Williams-Ellis beschreibt Die kluge Hausfrau als "menschenfreund" und "naturschützer", der das projekt
durch "eigenen landbesitz und die verwertung von familieneigentum" geschaffen habe. Portofino auf Elba sei sein vorbild gewesen; ein mediterranes ferienziel an der westküste von Wales. Einige gebäude Portmeirions, so erfahren die mutmaßlich überwiegend weiblichen leser, seien "nur attrappe und stehen wie filmkulissen nur halb und pappdeckeln da, was der romantik keinen abbruch" tue.
Nun ja, auch wenn keins der gebäude tatsächlich aus pappe ist oder war, die beobachtung des ortes als virtuelle filmkulisse ist so schlecht nicht. Allerdings wird weder die fernsehserie NUMMER 6 (entstanden 1966) erwähnt, noch dass der ort für eine vielzahl von film- und fernsehproduktionen genutzt wurde und wird.

FAMILIEN-DÖRFER
Ein bericht im magazin STERN (nr. 21/2017) befasst sich mit in privatem besitz befindlichen kleinen dörfern in Großbritannien. Doch im gegensatz zum verheißungsvollen foto auf der
inhaltsseite des magazins kommt Portmeirion, der ort von NUMMER 6, im artikel gar nicht vor. In der hauptsache ist von dem fischerdörfchen Clovelly in Cornwall die rede. Allerdings wird Portmeirion mit einem doppelseitigen foto gewürdigt. In der ecke links oben heißt es: "Orange in grün - Das Dorf wird zum Gesamtkunstwerk". Und in der ecke rechts unten: "Die Häuser von Portmeirion in Nordwales erinnern an Italien oder Südfrankreich, auch wegen ihres künstlich ausgebleichten Teints." Diese charakterisierung steht nun wiederrum im gegensatz zu dem in der tat sehr farbenprächtigen bild. Beinahe schöner als in wirklichkeit.

The real location where the shooting for THE PRISONER took place has been a luxurious hotel in North Wales for decades. Commencing in 1925, it was built after the ideas and conceptions of its founder Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. On the initial screening the name of the location was disclosed only in the very last episode.
There is an admisson charge at the toll gate. And some areas of it, belonging to the cottages, are private property that cannot be accessed. The Village is known, among others, for its handcrafted ceramic items of the Pottery, the whole Village is (or was) sold in miniature scale. Portmeirion also has afamous rhododendron collection. And there are other arts and crafts shops.
Those searching recreation during or after their tour of the Village may dine in style in the hotel restaurant or get a snack in the self-service bar with a terrace.
FAMILY VILLAGES
In an article of German STERN magazine (no. 21/2017) privately owned villages in Great Britain are the subject of concern. However, contrary to the promising photo on the contents page of
the magazine it isn't about Portmeirion at all but about one called Clovelly in Cornwall in the first place. Portmeirion is merely on the magazine contents page and, quite prominently, on the centre spread page. The caption in the left upper corner says: "Orange in green - The village becoming a total work of art." In right corner below it says: "The buildings of Portmeirion in North Wales evoke Italy or southern France and that's because of the artificially faded colours too." Which, in turn, does not match thr colourful photo. Almost more beautiful than in reality.
