CAMERA OBSCURA

Die urform einer jeden fotografischen kamera, wörtlich: "dunkler raum", wurde um 1500 von Leonardo da Vinci beschrieben. Durch ein loch bzw. - in verfeinerten vorrichtungen - eine sammellinse fällt licht von draußen auf eine weiße oder auch transparente projektionsfläche oder tafel und bildet die gegenstände auf dem kopf stehend und seitenverkehrt ab.

Am alten kai, unmittelbar neben dem gebäude "White Horses" befindet sich seit etwa 1939 die camera obscura Portmeirions in einem leuchturm-ähnlichen gebäude, das 1936/37 entstand. Die blendenöffnung ist drehbar, sodass nahezu der komplette Ort überschaubar ist. Williams-Ellis über die camera obscura: "Für mich hat es immer noch etwas magisches, auf meinen wunsch hin die gesamte umgebung sich in einer abfolge von scharf detaillierten farbigen und lebendigen bildern vor mir auf dem weißen tisch präsentieren zu lassen."

Ähnliche anlagen gab es um die wende zum 20. jahrhundert viele in Europa, eine unter anderem noch immer, und sehr beeindruckend, hoch über der mittelwalisischen stadt Aberysthwyth.

Literally a "dark room", this device is the prototype of all photographic cameras. It was already described around the year 1500 by Leonardo da Vinci. Light falls through a hole, or rather a lens - in the case of more refined ones - onto a table or screen, transparent or not, thereby casting upside-down and wrong way round images of the outside.

At the old quay, next to the "White Horse", a building which resembles a lighthouse has been standing since 1936/37. That's where Portmeirion's camera obscura has been since the year 1939. The aperture turns so almost the whole Village can be watched. Williams-Ellis on the camera obscura: "There is still, to me, an abiding magic in being able to command at will the whole surrounding landscape to display itself in successive images in sharp detail and vivid colour on the white table before me."

Ever since the turn to 20th century many similar installations were built in Europe. Among those that survived is that one, and quite impressive, high above the mid-Wales town of Aberysthwyth.
